Hailing from Cornwall, Rob’s on a mission to surf the biggest wave on the planet and we at Mango’s want to support him and share his journey with you guys along the way.
Rob has been training extensively not only in preparation for the next season at Nazare, but also for entering the intense world of free-diving!
His passion for big wave riding and shear determination to eliminate the fears associated with such a quest is inspiring, not just to other surfers, but for those looking to overcome obstacles within mental health as well.
Some interesting facts about Rob:
He’s a twin, has an unhealthy obsession with Tunnack’s Caramel Wafer Biscuits (who doesn’t right?) and grew up breaking horses in the middle of nowhere.
For anyone who has broken a horse before, you can understand where Rob’s determination and patience for big waves comes from.
Welcome to the team Rob, we’re excited to be a part of your journey!
Follow Rob’s story here and @robfowlie to see what it takes to ride giants and live to tell the tale!

Welcome to the team: Iskha Thres
From the early days of coming into the store, it’s been a pleasure to watch Ishka grow and develop into the surfer he is today.
He’s a bundle of joy and we are proud to support him in anyway that we can along his surfing journey.
As a young surfer/lifeguard/traveller, it’s inspiring to see him put the same passion into his surfing as he does with his various other pursuits. We are certain that wherever Ishka goes he will be smiling along the way, delivering the same energy and enthusiasm outside of the water as he does in.
Ishka is currently travelling the east coast of Australia, hitting up as many bucket-list spots as possible whilst visiting friends and filming as much as he can before the lifeguard season starts.
Some interesting facts about Ishka: He likes to surf when it’s onshore, dine on Mexican food and get down to Lime Cordiale’s “Money”.
Welcome aboard the team, Ishka 🫡
Follow Ishka’s journey here and @ishka01 to check out what he’s getting upto on the reg!

We took the now stocked Yeti Yonder Bottle for a brisk wander through the woodlands of Dartmoor this weekend and lets just say, it's our favourite walking bottle yet..
Don't get us wrong, we LOVE a traditional Yeti Rambler, from the 26oz up to the beastie 64oz! But sometimes they can be a little heavy and cumbersome to take for a light stroll, especially when you're hanging on to an eager beagle who cant wait to get going!
The Yonder bottle has all the benefits of a regular sturdy Rambler, but it's 0.3kg (50% lighter) weight is much nicer to be carrying whilst scrambling over logs and streams..
Paired with the unbeatable chug cap, this is 100% our go to bottle for light outdoor missions as well as an ideal choice for the gym!
Check out the Yonder range now stocked on our website.

Name: The Bastard
Construction: Polyester/Foam
Conditions: waist high to double over head
Fin Setup: Futures thruster
Fins Included: Not Included
Price: £479
What We Think: So putting things simply this thing is an all out weapon of a surfboard designed to slay dragons and rescue damsels by copping in any punchy wave you can throw at it! the board is a high performance masterpiece and needs a wave that fights back when you throw it at the lip.
This board is perfect for any trip away when you know you want a board that will perform and likewise to some of those spots in the uk that even in waist high can push back and allow you to unleash it from rail to rail.
This is not a board for beginners its for anyone into high performance and quick snappy surfing and someone who wants to constantly be pushing there surfing with new and innovative moves. Its John john Florence go to board on tour, that's all you really need to know.
What Pyzel Say:
Good in beach break, reefs and points, this is a very versatile board that has quite a bit of continuous rocker for a snappy, loose feel, but still has a lot of drive in good waves. Single concave throughout adds lift and more speed.
The outline features a tail that is slightly pulled in, giving bite and drive through turns, a subtle hip that also makes it easy to redirect and we flattened out the deck to re-position the volume for a lively feel.
Not recommended for beginners, the Bastard is a great board for everyday sessions in waves with at least a little curve in the face and some push to them, and it really comes alive in powerful, juicy conditions.
The most High Performance design in our range, The Bastard is the board that John John Florence rides in most conditions and comps all around the world (in 2016 he finished 1st in Rio, Portugal, and Haleiwa and won the World Title mostly riding his favorite Bastards).
Dimensions :
6'0" 19 " 2 3/8" 27.30 L
added note the one instore and online was hand shaped by Pyzel not factory cut.

Smooth and just oozes flow and ease of use! This board is a beauty.
Name: Simon Anderson Mollusc
Construction: Polyester/Foam
Conditions: Knee to head high
Fin Setup: FCS2 Thruster
Fins Included: Not Included
What We Think:
This boards got it all wave catching ease with a load of volume through the nose and under the chest helping you glide into any wave from 2ft to 6ft. The beak nose helps to spread that volume and foam towards the nose of the board and puts the foam right where you want it without compromising rocker and shape, meaning you can shave foam on that sick thumb tail that will be sick for round carvey drawn out turns and drawing some pretty creative arched lines on any wave you throw at it.
This is an all round good board to have in your quiver as you can surf it in anything and still have an intermediate/performance feel and flow to it and makes it super user friendly for most levels.
So if your looking to round out those turns and look stylish whilst doing it this could be the next stick for you!
Round tail, wide semi roundish nose, low soft rail, medium single to double concave, thicker beak nose, slightly thicker tail. Rocker medium to low.
Simon first shaped this board for himself in 2002 as a 6'4 x 20 1/4 x 2 3/4. It has great paddle speed for an easy take off and is still a performance board, good for cut backs and off the top turns. Surf 2 or 3 inches shorter and 1/2 to 3/4 wider than your normal board.
Somehow still a performance board with easy down-the-line speed, flows nicely through turns, good for roundhouse cutbacks and off-the-top turns.Length | Width | Thickness | Volume (Ltr) |

How long have you been surfing? I've been infected by wave riding now for 7 or 8 years i think. I grew up pretty landlocked towards the London area and was surrounded by people who prefered a good game of cricket or a rowing regatta than a good old surf mission. Luckely I'd always been pretty sporty as a kid and liked the idea of surfing but had never had the opportunity, until my dad got some free train tickets from his commuters pass anywhere in the UK and he proposed we go as far as possible. We ended up in Newquay, Cornwall and decided to try out surfing and a month later had a family holiday to Cali booked and caught my first green waves at Malibu point, yeah I got hooked pretty quick.
After that every weekend or break I was travelling back to the coast I could to surf and get in the water even moved to newquay in summers to work and surf at 17, since finishing school I've based my life and decisions around it and it seems to be working out alright so far. I'm still a kook but i got a few years to work on that.
First Surfboard? first board was a crapp yellow 7'0 banana that I got from some shop in the Newq as it had some sweet fins thrown in, no idea who the shaper was think it was an ozzy import. The thing was floaty and good for learning but realistically should've got a big fat boy flyer in heinze sight probably would've slided better, but heck it was a learning curve.
Notable Surf Trips? I mean before the age of 18 every trip to Cornwall or Devon was like a mini surf trip which was kinda cool as actually had a crew of keen surfers back at home. I've had a few cool trips out to the standard Indo routine and around a few of the islands like Sumbawa and Lombok which were pretty rad and managed to get some surprisingly perfect and uncrowded waves out there.
Kinda been on abit of a mission to make the most of my time around the British Isles and Europe whilst im studying and before I go on some full on travels apre University next year. Like Scotland & Ireland I've been a fair few times now and the waves are pretty mystical and I don't really mind the cold anymore I just love the weird adventures you end up on these trips and the funny characters you meet, Plus.. the waves Pump! had better waves in both these uncrowded places than I have had in the warm and crowded waters abroad. I'm sure I'll do the whole Southern Hemisphere stuff next winter after I've travelled the whole of Europe in Boris the van.

I actually just got back from probably one of the best surf trips I've ever been on from Thurso, Scotland! I'm not saying too much as im writing an article and were putting together some clips from it, but what I will tell you is that it was one of those trips that had abit of everything in it! waves that scared you to the core, waves that you couldn't help but fall in love with and a lot of stories and interesting mishaps along the way.
Current Equipment? My go to now is my performance twinny or my retro keel fin fish with glass ons shaped by Hugh Brockman whos my go to shaper nowadays. I used to be super narrow minded and only think about narrow performance knives and its all I wanted to surf, until I realised I was never gunna be a pro surfer and wanted to just enjoy every wave and fit the board to the wave rather then try and force it. So now im pretty interested in going retro and just styling out and having as much fun as i can on any kinda board and becoming a more all rounded surfer, not just a performance prawn.

Any final thoughts, inspirational quotes ect? here's a quote I've been running through my head since watching Taylor Steeles latest surf flick Proximity from his holiness the Dalai Lama when asked what surprises him most about mankind -
“Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
I like this cus it brings things back down to earth and helps me to keep a open mind to what's ahead of me.
Also I'd like to just say cheers to our team here and everyone involved in all we do here at the Surf shop which is heading in a pretty positive and prosperous direction due to the hard work and input from the whole team. yew long live Mangos surfing.

How long have you been surfing? Long enough to be better than I still am! Still out there any opportunity I get mind. I just had a fairly wretched surf at 2ft Harlyn in North Cornwall. I reckon the first winter I surfed through was around when I was 13 to 14, once I'd put the yards through a winter that's when i really felt identified as being a 'surfer'. I used to bodyboard if it was bigger than head high and ride my standup if it was smaller, I'm always surprised more people don't take that approach now, bodyboarding is a great way to fasttrack your surf knowledge and timing.
I grew up in SE Cornwall, despite being 40 minutes from the coast I was fortunate that my Dad was a surfer and school teacher. We used to hit the water every weekend and after school in the lighter months. Full drop everything when the school bell would ring. Some of my most stoked surfing memories were sat outside my school gate waiting for my dad (he worked in an adjacent town) to pick me up to go surf whilst eating peanut butter sandwiches. Unbridled joy.
First Surfboard? A 6'2 'Best Ever' early 80's thruster - believe they were shaped in the 'badlands' of cornwall, around St Agnes. I cant remember the shaper, but imagine Joe (owner of Mango Surf) would know. It wasn't to bad for a grommet to be honest, fairly forgiving full rails and close on 3 inches thick, flatish rocker.
My parents recently moved house and my dad put said surfboard up for sale at a local auction house, it sold for £22 which turned out to be £16 after the fees. Cheers Dad - unsentimental old git.
Notable Surf Trips? I've been fortunate to live through a period of time when surf travel has been incredibly affordable. People often talk through rose tinted glasses about the past, but the access to affordable, quality equipment and travel has never been easier than now. That being said, as I enter my thirties I am becoming more conscious of my impact on the planet and have tried to reduce my air travel and travel by car/ferry where possible. Barring the yearly blow out to Western Australia, where my girlfriend is from (no one is perfect).
My first proper surf trip was with Joe who now runs palvelukotilounatuuli alongside Star Surf Camps when I was 18. Nothing that adventurous (although it felt it at the time) but a true right of passage trip to Bali, Indonesia. Joe had not only been the year before but was a few years older than me, he seemed like a sensei of surf knowledge back then. I'm stoked he is able to share his passion for surf travel with Star Surf Camps and palvelukotilounatuuli.
I have spent much of my twenties in WA, lifeguarding around Margaret river. The variety and consistency of surf, coupled with the access to space and wilderness is unparalleled.
In terms of true adventure, a few years ago me and my pal Harry hiked out to the most remote beach in the U.K. In the NW of Scotland. We had to take all our supplies (budget style), camped out in shepherds shelters, dodged MOD live firing ranges and drank a lot of whiskey. That was the hardest, most beautiful surf trip i've ever been on. We surfed places most people will never even see.
Current Equipment? I've been fortunate enough to have been supported by Formula Energy Surfboards for about 5 years now. They are based in Tweed Heads, Australia. Eden Scallan who runs the operation has always been very generous with his provision of team seconds, and assorted odds and ends that come from the factory.
(Photo credit: Josh Bystrom - Cloudbreak, Fiji)
The surfboards I have been riding are of USC construction, which consists of carbon fiber taped rails, stringerless blanks are vacuum glassed. All in all they are incredibly versatile, well built surfboards which have an average lifespan much longer than a typical surfboard. I've only snapped one in 5 years and that wave would have broken an Ox!
I tend to put any second hand surfboard through the racks at palvelukotilounatuuli so keep your eyes peeled. It's so good to see a fully stacked rack of second hand surfboards in a surf shop, I can't quite think of another like it in the SW. Perfect for student frothers and testament to the surf froth of Joe and Ross who run the show.
Any final thoughts, inspirational quotes ect? I see Joe's passion and belief in the value of a physical surf shops manifested in palvelukotilounatuuli. Bricks and mortar surf shops are busy figuring out their place in our 'brave new surfing world' but a surf shop for the local community will always live on. A student town like Plymouth deserves that place. Somewhere you can drop by for a browse, buy a block of wax, do the under arm test on a full rack of second hand surfboards. Dream of a freshy, a birthday present for a girlfriend or a chin wag about how bad the surf has been in the U.K. Support Local.

]]>In a new mini blog series we are going to take a look behind the scenes at the surfboards and equipment the Mango team and some of our close friends are using, whilst getting to know a bit more about them at the same time. First up is me...
Name: Ross
Position: Mango Surf Shop, online & surf team manager. (more on that last one coming soon)
How long have you been surfing? I only started surfing when I was 17. This is when we could drive ourselves to the beach. Before that it was all skate for me. So i guess that's about 13 years now.
First Surfboard? I will never forget this. Like i said i was 17, working part time at the local Mcdonalds whilst still at school. I'd saved about £100. Like most weekends we would drive down to Newquay, surf, party and sleep in the car. But this weekend was different, we stopped in at Surfers Paradise (rip) and i told the guy i had some money and wanted a surfboard but i didn't know what i needed. His eyes lit up, he asked what my budget was and funnily enough he had the prefect surfboard for me. He pulled a board out of the rack that looked like it had been there a long time and it was nothing like my friends NSP mini mal, but he said it would be perfect and who was i to argue. I still have that board...it's a 6'10 custom gun with so much rocker you could probably surf it either way around. I legit didn't stand on it for 6 months but i didn't care at the time. In hindsight it's probably the cause of my awful style.
Above-I'm normally the one taking pictures, so this is a rare one of me surfing.
Favourite Surf Trip? After visiting Morocco twice i swore i would never go back again, but as is the case for most UK surfers, it was January and i was already fed up with the winter and constant onshore winds. I checked the forecast and got on a plane the next day. Less than 24 hours later i was back in Taghazout but this time was different, it pumped for 7 days i got to surf all the points and it wasn't even that busy. I'd herd rumours Dane reynolds, Yadin Nicol and Conner Coffin were in town and on an afternoon when i couldn't paddle anymore we got in the car and took a drive to a wave we thought may be breaking. Dane and the guys were just suiting up and we watched them surf for about 3 hours totally in awe. They even came and had a chat with us post surf.
Above-The pro's showing us how it's done. Below-My weird face with Dane Reynolds and Yadin Nicol.
Current Equipment? Board wise i've just picked up a new Mango Surfboards performance fish. Like i said i grew up skateboarding and this was reflected in my boards. Shorter, wider and quite flat. But i fancied a little change so sized up to a 6'0 with a touch more rocker but still enough volume to help me get into the South Devon waves. The Mango Surfboards are shaped by local legend and all round nice guy Nigel Semmens. He helped me dial in the dims for exactly what i needed.
I set it up with the new Al Merrick twin + trailer FCS2 fin set. This was the fin set up used when i feel like i was surfing my best a few years ago. The big side fins offer heaps of drive and hold, and the little trailer just adds stability and control when i manage to do a top turn.
Finished of with Jam Traction comp leash, deck pad and front foot pad. Now i realise that's controversial but it's helping me with my wonky front foot placement.
Above-My wonky front foot in action. Below-My new setup to try and help that.
Any final thoughts, inspirational quotes ect? Don't be afraid to ask for help, this doesn't just relate to surf but in life as well. Starting our surf shop was a big leap and we had no experience in bricks and mortar retail but we took all the advice we could get. Now if id used that advice when i was younger maybe i wouldn't be such a kook.

Name: Polen Surfboards Catchy
Construction: Polyester/Foam
Conditions: Waist to overhead
Fin Setup: FCS2 Thruster
Fins Included: Not Included
Price: £480
What We Think: Every time I walk past this surfboard i can't help but pick it up. I don't know if its how it got its name but it always catches my eye. In my opinion this would make a great surfboard for anyone who has surfed bigger boards and is now looking to lose some length but without compromising wave count. The wide point is pulled way forward which keeps volume in the front half of the board, making sure you can still catch waves early but also still stable underfoot once you pop up.
Once you are up and riding, this is when the magic happens, the rear half of the surfboard is way more performance orientated, the pin tail and sharp rails will offer a ton of hold and drive in down the line style waves. With that hold you will feel like you can really push your turns to the next level without the fear of sliding out.
The Catchy really reminds me of a Hypto Krypto from Hayden Shapes, which means this surfboard is not just for improving surfers. You can drop the length pretty short but still keep the volume high. For example the 5'6 has 28.3ltrs. On a surfboard of that length you can fit snugly in the pocket and be explosive in the turn. It really is a 1 board quiver type of surfboard.
What Polen Say: This model was designed for surfers who are not just frothing for high performance moves, but still want to surf good and have most fun in everyday surfing conditions. The wider nose, flatter rocker, and thicker rails will help you get into the waves very easily and flow through the weaker sections. The smooth rounded outline and the narrow rounded pin tail will allow you to make rail-to-rail game whenever you want. The Catchy is a versatile, fast and loose fun stubby board that will make you happy either in good waves or weaker days as well. This can be your favorite all around board or your best travel friend for small to head-high surf. With a single to smooth double concave with V off the tail, you can ride it 2"-4" shorter than your short- board.

Here in our little surf shop we understand that not everyone can justify a brand new surfboard at the drop of a hat, that is why we always try to keep a fully stocked rack of varied second hand surfboards.
]]>Second hand surfboards are great if you are looking to try out a different tail shape or a summer groveller without the financial risk of a brand new surfboard. They are also great for the boards you may need but will not use that often like a step up/big wave gun for travelling with or a super retro twin fin.
We currently have about 20 second hand surfboards in stock and here are some of my favourites that i don't think will be around for very long.
AL MERRICK FRED RUBBLE 5'10
The Fred rubble is easily one of the most popular surfboards channel islands have made. With a lower entry rocker and wider outline than a standard shortboard it’s just a fun board for waves from waist high to a little over head. This one is in great condition and has an FCS2 thruster fin setup for £280
MARK RICHARDS 1978 RETRO TWIN FIN 5'10
The 1978 Retro Twin Fin started the multi-fin revolution and completely changed our perception of high-performance surfing. The 1978 twin features
This surfboard has to be seen to be truly appreciated. It has only ever been used once and would look as good on a wall as it would under your feet. It has 1 or 2 deck compressions so is basically brand new. Gloss & polish finish with glassed in fins. £550
LUKE YOUNG MAKO 5'8
If you surf on the south coast of Devon you will already be familiar with this model, if you dont you need to try it. Shaped by local legend Luke Young. The Mako surfboard features a deep 4 channel bottom and low, sharp rear rails add drive and grip in surf from 2-6 ft. £180
If you want to check out all of our second hand surfboard you can see them here:
To keep our second hand rack full with a variation of different surfboards we are more than happy to help you sell your older boards. We only take a small commission and most boards don't hang around long. If you go on to buy a full price surfboard from our surf shop we won't take any commission.
If any of you reading have a mini mal or a hybrid style shortboard/summer groveller that you are thinking about selling these have been flying off our racks so we may be able to help. Contacting us is easy, just check out the details below:

Jeremy Flores has finished the 2017 WSL season with a last minute victory at the Pipeline Masters over the new World Champion John-John Florence.
Riding the FCS II Carver PCC Medium for extra control and drive, Jeremy etches his name on the coveted trophy for the second time.
And with storm Eleanor currently battering the UK its given us surfers the chance to dust off our step ups and have a go in bigger more powerful surf, if your looking to add more hold and drive to your bigger wave surfing, especially in the barrel check out the setup Jeremy was using. We have it all in stock online and in our surf shop. Just click on the images to go straight to the product or pop in and have a look.
HERE’S 3 REASONS WHY JF RODE THE FCS II CARVER PCC AT PIPE.
“Whenever I’m riding bigger, hollow waves I tend to use fins in the Carver family, rather than my signature fin which I like for everyday conditions. That extra control makes you feel more confident, especially when you’re driving through the barrel”. Jeremy Flores
LEASH
When surfing Pipe, you need a strong leash, and the FCS 7’ Regular does the job for medium size ‘Hawaii’ waves that pack a solid punch. The Regular Leash has a thicker chord compared to the lighter Competition Leash, and a slightly wider cuff. All FCS Premium leashes have double swivels and a deluxe high-density neoprene ankle strap with soft lycra edging.
Our waves at home are probably not comparable to the power at pipe so a regular 6ft leash will be more than enough for the majority of shortboards, but if you have a bigger board or are just a straight up hell man we stock all the sizes up to 9ft
TRACTION
Jeremy’s signature 3-piece FCS JF Traction pad has dual grooves, a low kick, narrow arch bar, and perforations for added sensitivity. This low profile pad is great for surfers who prefer less bulk under their back foot.
STATS & FACTS
62 WCT events and 12 WSL World Titles have been won by surfers riding the FCS II system and fins.

Est. 2008 burger records is an independent record label that came to life by founders Sean Bohrman and Lee Rickard. As members of “Thee Makeout Party”, they were both already passionate about their music and their retro vinyl style, and so decided to channel their enthusiasm into Burger Records. Starting out as a small record shop in Fullerton, California, they quickly expanded as a label signing multiple big name brands within the Cali/surf/alternative genre, all whilst remaining true to their style.

If you are not already aware we share our shop with the guys from Star Surf Camps.
Their main aim is to provide you with the best budget surf holidays where you can learn to surf or improve your skills whilst chilling in amazing settings and making friends for life (and not clearing out your life savings)
If you are a beginner or intermediate surfer I personally think surfing the south west coast of France is a no brainer. Only a few hours away, good food, great weather and even better surf, and why not do it with a super friendly, experienced group of guys that know that stretch of coast as well as anyone. Moliets is known for its waves that suit all standards but without the competitive line up you can expect in and around Hossegor. But its not all about surfing, there is yoga on the beach, a Tiki Bar, Skate Ramp, Outdoor Cinema, Tarp Surfing, BBQs & more to keep you entertained.

If you are looking for an even more chilled out or family break they have that covered as well in Northern Spain. Situated in Oyambre Natural Park, the camp offers you an exciting week of surfing, Yoga, SUP, beach volleyball and much more. As well as that, Spain’s north coast has stunning beaches, perfect waves and breath-taking landscapes, what more could you ask for?

And dont worry, if for some reason you don't want to go on holiday and stay in a tent they have a surf house and private apartments on the island of Fuerteventura. This amazing island can cater for all levels of surfers but there is also a yoga studio and some of the most beautiful beaches you will ever see. The climate makes it a great winter escape for anybody looking to top up that fading summer tan.

We have designed this first range to be really understated, but there are more to the garments than first meets the eye. The T-Shirts are 70% bamboo and 30% organic cotton making them them the softest T-Shirt I own. With a simple neck label and hem tag these are great for day to day or wearing on a night out.
The crew neck jumpers are made from 100% recycled materials which if you ask us is just great. 60% Recycled pre consumer cotton organically grown and 40% Recycled post consumer polyester. Plus they look great with a neck label and embroidered chest logo.
And finally we still have our mango surfing change robes, at just £20 i challenge you to find a cheaper nicer robe.

Make sure you are ready for when it arrives with the mango surfing summer essentials:
First off we would just love for there to be consistent waves all summer long, but realistically we know that won't be the case. Make the most of the summer sunset evenings on one of our globe longboards and cruisers.
We also have longboards that have £50 off.
When there are waves you want to make sure you are riding the correct board to get the most out of the conditions, we have got summer fun covered with hybrids, mals, logs and swellys! And just remember bic's and foamies are not just for beginners, for a more advanced surfer you will find it hard to get a better cost/fun ratio, you will basically be able to catch waves when it looks almost flat.
And dont forget the ultimate summer accessory. The shades. Nectar sunnies all have polarized lenses but will not break the bank so if you're anything like me it wont be too depressing when you sit on them or leave them on the roof of the car.
In store and online we have many more summertime accessories from globe trainer socks to sex wax sun cream so why not pop in and have a look.

This pin tail is designed for maximum hold and control, generally in bigger hollow surf. Pin tails have the narrowest width of all the tails. This reduction in width minimizes the tail's surface area allowing you to sink and dig into the water causing the board to hold a line and maintain direction.
This design gives you maximum water flow without any unexpected release for greater hold. Pintails are harder to maneuver, they are not designed to be used in small waves where tail surface area is needed for lift and generating speed. That is why you typically find these pin tails on big wave guns.
When you're dropping into a large wave, stability, hold and control at high speeds is more important than maneuverability.
This rounded pin tail shape is similar to a pin tail because it allows water to wrap around its contour for better traction than the square/squash tail in bigger, faster, hollow waves. It is more versatile with more width than the pin tail. The added width increases the surface area and results in more lift. More lift allows the board to be loser and more maneuverable than its pin tail counterpart.
With the curved tail shape you should expect more drawn out arcing turns and less snappy, explosive turns than its square/squash tail counterpart. The added surface area will also provide more speed in slow spots.

]]>The iconic part of any Fish surfboard is the tail shape, so much so that modern surfboards with a swallow tail are being described as a Fish even though they couldn't be more different.
Either way the benefits of a swallow tail surfboard remain. The crucial one being how wide you can make the tail without it losing control, a squash tail with the same width would just slide out.
Its design is similar to the pintail in that the points will give the board more hold and traction in the wave face. The vee that is cut out of the tail allows for bite and control when the board is going in and out of turns.
The swallow tail is a versatile design that features in surfboards of all shapes and sizes. Small wave fish surfboards have a wide swallow tail for increased surface area and drive but the cutout releases through turns.
A more traditional shortboard and even a bigger wave surfboard/gun may have a tighter swallow tail for hold and control with slightly more manoeuvrability vs the standard pintail or rounded pintail.

As Gabriel Medina demonstrates swallow/fish tail surfboards are not just designed for cruising.

]]>Buying a new surfboard can be a complete minefield, in this series of blog posts we want to simplify all the different factors that can contribute to a magic board or another on the second hand rack.
The first thing I think about when purchasing a new surfboard is what type of waves i want to use it in, the tail shape will make a huge difference towards this.
When looking at different tails, a good thing to remember is: more angular shapes will give you more pivot and sharper turns. A rounder shaped tail will give you rounder and smoother turns.
Tail shape influences the hold and release on the surface of the wave. Curves hold water flow whereas corners allow water to break away. A round or pin tail will hold the water longer making it more stable in steeper surf. A square or angular tail will release water making it looser, skatier and more snappy.
Different shapes will change the width of the tail, which determines surface area. This will influence your acceleration and how much control you have on the face of the waves.
In this blog post i want to focus on the squash tail.
The most common tail among shortboards is a squash tail, it is a variation of the square tail. The flat edge of the tail allows for quick release. This makes the board very responsive, and easier for sharper turns. The shape also allows for more width, this increases the surface area in the tail. More surface area means more lift, making it easier to plane and maintain speed. This is a great advantage in weaker waves.
The rounded ends give the board more hold than a square tail. A squash tail is very versatile as it is designed to give you better control in steeper and bigger waves as well as helping you generate speed in smaller waves.
If you need any more information on squash tails or other things you should be looking for in your next surfboard contacting us is easy...

So we got on the phone to the guys at Polen and they have created us some mini mal's and longboards. The mini mal's come in 8'0, 8'2 & 8'4, and the longboards are 9'2.
The thinking behind the mal was no matter weather you are beginner, intermediate or advanced surfer there should always be a space in your quiver for a classic mini mal.
